TONIGHT: "Please Give" Dir. Nicole Holofcener

Dir. Nicole Holofcener ("Friends With Money", "Lovely and Amazing", "Sex and the City") hits us with another dark female-centric comedy starring her muse (and L.A.F.'s personal fav) Cathrine Keener. "Please Give" opens tonight and is playing all over town.

We recommend seeing it at The ArcLight. We love that they show such a great range of films from indie to blockbuster. Plus, their restaurant is much better than expected.

Here's the trailer .... We can't wait to see it!

TONIGHT in LITERATURE: Book Signing - Carrol Burnett!

Hi L.A. Fems!

How cool is this.. Carol Burnett is going to be signing copies of her new book "This Time Together: Laughter and Reflections" at the Borders in Westwood.

For those of you who don't know, Carol Burnett is a pioneer of the female comedian trend in popular culture over the last 40 years. Her sketch comedy show, "The Carol Burnett Show" was the only one of it's kind when it premiered in 1967. The first topical, sketch comedy show helmed by a woman, "The Carol Burnett Show" ran for 11 seasons and won 25 Emmy Awards. Her new book chronicles this chapter in her life.

Let us not forget that Ms. Burnett also played Ms. Hannigan in the 1982 remake of Annie. God I love that movie.

Anyway.. Go buy her book, and get it signed!

TONIGHT: Juliette Lewis!

We all know her as a terrorized resident of a sleepy Florida town near the Cape Fear River; as Gilbert's quirky love interest; and as the infamously deadly Mallory...

If you don't know who Juliette Lewis is.. Go see a movie! 50/50 chance she'll be in it.

Not only is she our generation's most notable female badass, but now she is also a Rockstar. Go figure.

She's performing tonight at the Echoplex! Her music rules, and she's awesome live.

TONIGHT: "Lascivious Something" - Performance

It's Saturday! Theater night, as far as I'm concerned.. Here's what's on deck.

"Lascivious Something" by Sheila Callaghan (Writer, "United States of Tara") It's only running for a couple more weeks, so check it out!

"Presented by the Circle X Theatre Company, the play begins with the incendiary reunion of two American ex-lovers: Liza (Alina Phelan) and August (Silas Weir Mitchell). August has traded his rabble-rousing American roots for a vineyard on a remote Greek island, where he and his young Mediterranean bride, Daphne, live in seemingly newly wedded bliss. The expatriate antihero is poised to taste the fruits of his first harvest when he is interrupted by Liza, whose sudden presence is as disconcerting as the radio announcement welcoming Ronald Reagan as America's newest president. Sibyl Wickersheimer's astute set design reflects the barren inner landscape of the complex characters, whose unfettered relationships with themselves — and each other — are inspired by Greek tragedy." - Flavorpill

TONIGHT: ART OPENING - Kirsten Huntley Gabbe and Caroline Kim

Hi Folks,

It's Friday night, so naturally we all want to go to some sweet Art Openings. Thank goodness we have just the one for you...

Kirsten Huntley Gabbe, and Caroline Kim at Gallery 208 in Little Tokyo!

Site-specific Installation by Caroline Kim | Oil Paintings by Kirsten Gabbe

Gallery 203
Little Tokyo Galleria 333 #208

"On display is Caroline Kim’s “Contact: experiment on broadcasting” which plays with the idea of art existing in malls. With her site-specific installations and performance art, Caroline creates unexpected contemplative and interactive moments.

Kirsten Gabbe presents her most recent series “After Paintings,” departing from her representational work to explore the base nature of oil painting in translucent washes on canvas. To encourage interaction from the community, Kirsten set up “Memory Net,” on which visitors can add their personal connections to a Little Tokyo timeline."

TONIGHT: Lizzy Waronker - "The Alchemist's Closet"

Art Opening! You know what that means.. free snacks, free booze, good art. Abstract sculpturist Lizzy Waronker is opening her new show "The Alchemist's Closet" tonight at Nano Gallery in Santa Monica.

I love Lizzy Waronker's work. Her sculptures are haunting and creepy, yet still inherently feminine. Each piece has a 'found art' feel that I'm a total sucker for. I'm no art critic, but I've seen her work at other galleries, and I love it. Take a look at her website, and go see the show tonight!

TONIGHT: REDCAT Presents 2 Films by Sharon Lockhart

Hello All!

Head over to the famed REDCAT Theater tonight for a screening of 2 films by visual artist Sharon Lockhart, "Lunch Break" (80 minutes) and "Exit" (41 minutes). Ms. Lockhart will also be in attendance.

"Lunch Break" - Following the seemingly mundane routine of shipyard workers during their lunch break, the eponymous first film exudes a gritty realism that belies its voyeuristic undertones. In one extended tracking shot, "Lunch Break" temporarily erases any inherent classism between the audience and the subjects onscreen, bringing in the viewer to experience the Bath Iron Works firsthand. The camera goes from slow movement to no movement at all in

Exit- which uses a fixed shot to subvert the role between audience and camera, drawing on elements of early experimental cinema

THIS WEEKEND: John Kelly: Paved Paradise - The Art Of Joni Mitchell

Folks... I think I found my new favorite thing in the world...

"John Kelly: Paved Paradise - The Art of Joni Mitchell"

1. A gorgeous Drag Queen
2. Preforming on stage
3. Doing Joni Mitchell

Where do I sign up?

"John Kelly is an Obie Award-winning actor, dancer and performance artist. He is also Joni Mitchell. Ok, not exactly, but so close that Joni herself is a fan! Kelly's theatrical homage to the music legend has thrilled audiences and critics across the nation, and now he brings Paved Paradise to the Renberg! The concept is simple: Joni Mitchell in concert, with Kelly on vocals, guitar and dulcimer, backed by piano and bass. Featuring songs from every stage of Joni's career, the "book" consists entirely of her own words. The original arrangements are intact, and Kelly's original-key recreation of her vocals is uncanny." - Flavorpill

When:
Apr 16–25
Fridays–Saturdays (8pm)
Sundays (7pm)

Where:
The Renberg Theatre
