Hello L.A. Femministas!
I apologize for the lack of events over the last few days.. It's been a Gray May. Good thing we've got a full week of good stuff coming up. Here's what's on the docket for tonight...
A true Riot Grrrl, Ms. Bonfire Madigan is a bitchin cellist and she's playing tonight at the Bootleg Theater. She's a Kill Rock Stars orig and I'm so stoked to see her live!
Also, if you haven't been to The Bootleg Theater over on the east side, you should definitely check it out. It's a little hole in the wall, and the space is great. They host music, theater, and all kinds of other stuff. There's a little open smoking lounge in the back. It's very cool.
"Bonfire Madigan Shive is a visionary cellist, vocalist, composer, performing artist, community activist and international touring musician from the US. Starting on cello at the age of nine, Madigan Shive began her composing career at fifteen in the Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene releasing music with seminal independent record labels K and Kill Rock Stars. Shive has gone on to establish herself as a singular and trailblazing performer, blending folk, art, punk, classical and avant-baroque styles.... She is currently finishing her sixth full-length album, to be released in collaboration with her label, MoonPuss Music." Bootleg Theater

BITCH!! (From Bitch and Animal) is preforming tonight at Club Spaceland. Bitch and Animal's album "Eternally Hard" changed the way I thought about feminist expressionism and experimental music. Formerly of Righteous Babe Records (Yeah, you know who I'm talking about...) Bitch is out on her own and rocking the stage with her electric violin and her new album "Blasted".
I am sooo excited to see Bitch preform tonight!

This Week: Regina Spektor - Live In London
Hello Feministas!
This is great news, Downtown Indipendent is having a 'One Night Only' Showing of Regina Spektor's concert film "Live In London" tomorrow night! I didn't even know Regina Spektor had a concert film, which makes it especially bad ass.
If you don't know Regina Spektor's music, check it out for sure. She's great. Think Tori Amos, but with comprehensible lyrics. (No offense, T.)
This is her latest video for "Eet". So good......
The film is directed by music video director, and frequent Regina collaborator, Adria Petty. Check out her website. I'm officially obsessed with her work. (Take a look at the trailer for her Paris Hilton doc. Hot. )
Here's the info for tomorrow night's screening. I'm definitely gonna try to make it, and I hope to see you there!
Where: Downtown Independent
215 Main St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012
When: Saturday, November 20th - 11PM
Price: $8!!

THIS SUNDAY: A Magical Musical Lunch - Benefit for Downtown Women's Center
Hello Everyone!
I'm sorry it's been a few weeks since our last update. We've been soaking up the last remnants of "summer" over by the beach. It's been so chilly, I'm not sure I went in the water once this year! Lame.
Anyway, we found a great event to close the season out and do a little good for some women who need our help. Here goes...
Performances by
The Dick and Jane Family Orchestra
And
Madam Pamita
The Queen of the Sideshow Fortune Tellers
Plus more musical guests!
Here are the details...
When: Sept. 12, 2010 1PM - 4PM
Where: El Chavo Mexican Restaurant in Los Feliz (Best quesadillas around)
Cost: $40 Per Person - includes Food, Beer, Margaritas, Live Music, Dancing, Tarot Card Reading (?)
* ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT DOWNTOWN WOMEN'S CENTER *
I think this should be fun. El Chavo is a great place and the Downtown Women's Center does great things for the women on Skid Row. Here's a link to they're web site. Check them out, and maybe donate a buck or two.
"The mission of the Downtown Women's Center is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability and to advocate ending homelessness for women."
I'm excited for this event, I hope to see you there!

THIS WEEK: Le Tigre Doc at OUTFEST!
Hi Ladies,
So sorry I've been M.I.A. again! I've been tied up working at the OUTFEST Film Festival, and I can only assume that you all have been enjoying your fair share of Cherry Bombs and Bears at our fab screenings.
I've definitely caught a few films, but the one I'm most excited for has yet to premiere. "Le Tigre: On Tour". Holy. F*ck. I'm so excited! Le Tigre was certainly a gateway in to feminism for me in the early years. I remember seeing them in concert while I was still in high school and wondering why there were so many girls there... and why they all kind of looked and acted like me. So badass. I've followed Le Tigre closely over the years, and I'm stoked to see this behind-the-scenes doc. These girls always come back in to my life at very specific times, and I'm ready to re-visit them. I hope you guys/gals/ other can all come too!
The screening is going to be this Thursday, July 15th at The Ford Ampitheater. Under the stars, and totally picnic style. Your ticket will also get you in to the after party (Location still TBD) where Johanna will be DJing. Whaaaaaat?!? I'm def not gonna miss it. Here's the Info..

TODAY: Pat Benatar Book Signing!! OMG
Hello Ladies, Gents, and Other!
Do you hate us because we've been gone for a week? Don't worry, we're back, and ready to kick off our return to the City of Angels with a very ass kicking, hard rocking, mind blowing, lady-in-leather-pants event.
Get ready....
THE Pat Benatar will be signing copies of her new book "Between A Heart And A Rock Place" (best title ever) tonight at the Borders in Westwood.
Woah, woah, woah, woah, woooooaaahhh!
If you were born anytime before music got terrible, then you grew up idolizing Pat Benatar's skin tight leather pants and bad-ass 'tude. You followed along to every snap and strut, and draped yourself in your parents green and white curtains. And now, we get to shake the hand of the woman who warned us about sex-as-a-weapon. I can't wait to read the book, and I'm planning on falling all over myself when I actually get to meet The Heartbreaker herself. She was the first woman that I ever heard say the phrase, "We are strong. No one can tell us we're wrong!" .. and by God, she was right.
What will I say to her? What will I wear? I hope I'm not crying in the picture.
"One of the best-selling female rock stars of all time, the incomparable Pat Benatar writes about her life, rock ’n’ roll, and how her generation changed music forever in Between a Heart and a Rock Place. The first solo female rocker ever to appear on MTV, Benatar writes with the same edge and attitude that was a hallmark of her music—from “Heartbreaker” to “Hit Me with Your Best Shot.” The winner of four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock performance, Pat Benatar tells a fascinating, no-holds-barred story of what it was really like to be a woman in the mostly male world of hard rock in the ’80s." - Publisher's Comments

We all know her as a terrorized resident of a sleepy Florida town near the Cape Fear River; as Gilbert's quirky love interest; and as the infamously deadly Mallory...

Not only is she our generation's most notable female badass, but now she is also a Rockstar. Go figure.

THIS WEEKEND: John Kelly: Paved Paradise - The Art Of Joni Mitchell
Folks... I think I found my new favorite thing in the world...
"John Kelly: Paved Paradise - The Art of Joni Mitchell"
1. A gorgeous Drag Queen
2. Preforming on stage
3. Doing Joni Mitchell
Where do I sign up?
"John Kelly is an Obie Award-winning actor, dancer and performance artist. He is also Joni Mitchell. Ok, not exactly, but so close that Joni herself is a fan! Kelly's theatrical homage to the music legend has thrilled audiences and critics across the nation, and now he brings Paved Paradise to the Renberg! The concept is simple: Joni Mitchell in concert, with Kelly on vocals, guitar and dulcimer, backed by piano and bass. Featuring songs from every stage of Joni's career, the "book" consists entirely of her own words. The original arrangements are intact, and Kelly's original-key recreation of her vocals is uncanny." - Flavorpill
When:
Apr 16–25
Fridays–Saturdays (8pm)
Sundays (7pm)
Where:
The Renberg Theatre
1125 N McCadden Pl
Los Angeles, CA 90038
Price:
